Three articles were found using comparable methods in investigating the gait speed in normal humans. The data from these articles were combined and presented as reference material. The readings were weighted according to sample size in the pooling process.

Since gait speed is related to gender and age the data are arranged in separate tables for women and men according to decade of age.

The primary purpose for this work was to establish a standard reference material consisting of healthy subjects. It is used as comparison for patients examined for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).  The material is of course relevant for comparison with any other group.

Patients with a supposed diagnosis of NPH are undergoing an examination on the Neurological Ward,  Aalborg University Hospital.

These patients suffer from a decrease in gait speed and stride length, and they do not have the capacity to increase their gait speed from slow, to comfortable and further on to maximum speed.

Their motor performance resembles what is seen in Parkinson’s disease, and they suffer from urinary incontinence and loss of memory. A part of the diagnostic programme is the ”TAP-test”.  Cerebrospinal fluid is “tapped” during a lumbar puncture to exert a temporary relief of pressure on the central nervous system. The maximum gait speed is monitored before and 3 hours after the lumbar puncture according to a standardized protocol. The distance is 10 metres.

MEN: Comfortable/normal gait speed

Measured over the middle 5 out of 10 meters

Acceleration and deceleration are eliminated.

Combined results from three sources. (see ref)
